Presented in period Russet Brown, this 1980 Austin Allegro L has an original-feel patina, complemented by a characterful woolly sheepskin-esque interior. While not a concours example, this car offers a strong, useable base with scope for improvement — ideal for those looking to preserve or lightly restore a late example of an Allegro.
This Allegro has had just two owners from new, with The Vendor having acquired it three years ago. During the Vendor’s ownership, the car has been improved mechanically. Work includes a rebuilt carburetor, new ignition system, a completely overhauled cooling system, recored fuel tank, rebuilt clutch master cylinder, new alternator and re-gassed suspension.
The Austin Allegro was British Leyland’s answer to the growing demand for compact family cars during the 1970s. The Allegro 3, introduced at the end of 1979, was the final iteration of the Allegro and brought minor updates and refinements in its final production years. Built until 1982, the Allegro remained on sale into 1983 due to surplus stock, even after the launch of its successor, the Austin Maestro. Despite its once-divisive reputation, the Allegro is slowly becoming a cult classic which represents a specific era of BL cars.
