This 1987 Volkswagen Golf Clipper Cabriolet is a great example of the now highly desirable open-top Golf, enhanced by the factory-fitted ‘Clipper’ bodykit. Finished in Silver with a contrasting Black soft top and Blue cloth interior, it has all the visual appeal of 1980s style with the charm of a practical, usable classic.
Owned by The Vendor for the past seven years, the car has seen active use and has proven itself on various long-distance trips, including a memorable drive across the Pyrenees in Spain. A decent history file accompanies the vehicle, featuring old MOT certificates, the original V.A.G. Service book which contains 10 stamps for services carried out between 1988 at 7,876 miles and 2001 at 97,342 miles. Also included are multiple invoices for maintenance and servicing. Having been unused for some time prior to the current ownership, the car underwent extensive refurbishment under the vendor’s stewardship. Numerous new parts were fitted to bring it back to reliable running condition, including a new fuel tank, brake pipes, suspension components, cambelt kit, water pump and radiator.
The Golf Cabriolet was first introduced to Volkswagen’s management by coachbuilder Wilhelm Karmann GmbH in 1976. The Clipper version, like this one, features distinctive styling cues such as body-coloured bumpers, flared wheel arches and side skirts. Powered by a 1,781cc engine shared with the GTi but running a single carburettor, the 90bhp Clipper offered style and accessibility in equal measure—an affordable yet widely regarded as a just as good alternative to the GTi convertible.
Due to health-related difficulties with getting in and out of the car, the vendor has made the reluctant decision to part ways after seven enjoyable years. This well-cared-for Clipper, is now ready for a new owner to enjoy.
