Presented here is a tidy example of the E493A generation Ford Prefect, finished in Black with a contrasting Tan interior. Retaining its original registration number, this car offers a charming period appearance combined with some thoughtfully integrated upgrades that enhance its usability without compromising its vintage character.
Owned by The Vendor for the past 17 years, the car was purchased shortly after a comprehensive restoration was completed. The history file includes the original logbook, owner's handbook, Ford workshop manual and a collection of receipts and invoices documenting the car’s maintenance and care over the years. Mechanically well cared for, this Prefect has seen just 4,035 miles since its engine was rebuilt. Recent maintenance within the past year includes a reconditioned steering box, carburettor, and distributor, as well as a fresh oil change following a system flush and installation of a new old stock filter. Additional enhancements include a conversion to 12-volt electrics with an alternator, upgraded 60W/55W lighting, fuse-protected circuits, and an in-line circuit breaker. The original instruments and dashboard accompany the car as well as useful spares and tools such as two specialised “Mushroom” valve guide removers (short and long) and a rear brake drum/hub tool. Adjustable tappets and a thermostatic electric fan aid ease of maintenance and improved cooling, while a full stainless steel exhaust and a telescopic shock absorber conversion further modernise the driving experience.
The Ford Prefect E493A was a mainstay of British motoring in the post-war years, offering dependable and economical transportation. Known for its simplicity and robust sidevalve engine, the Prefect has earned a loyal following.
This Prefect represents a rare opportunity to acquire a well-restored and thoughtfully updated example of Ford’s post-war saloon. With excellent support and parts availability from the Ford Sidevalve Owner's Club, it is well suited to both enjoyable use and continued preservation. A great choice for the enthusiast looking for a characterful, low-maintenance classic with solid provenance.
