On the Surface:

A very nice, original-feeling Mk II Triumph Stag finished in New White with a black soft top over a tidy Beige interior. This example is accompanied by its desirable factory-supplied, body-coloured hardtop. The interior presents well, and the car also comes with a BosScreen wind deflector complete with a detachable leathercloth half tonneau.

Maintenance & History:

Supplied new by The Westgate Motor House of Gloucester in May 1977, this Stag has remained in the care of the Vendor’s late husband for the last 14 years, having been purchased by him in 2011. According to the accompanying Heritage Certificate, it is a home-market RHD car, still presented in its original colour scheme. It was optioned new with a Sundym laminated windscreen, factory hardtop, head rests, inertia reel seatbelts, and alloy wheels. The Vendor tells us that some additional history may be available, but at present only the original Triumph Stag Owner’s Handbook and a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate are included. Should more paperwork be located, it will be sent on and this description updated accordingly.

The Model:

Styled by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, the Triumph Stag was produced between 1970 and 1978 as a 2+2 luxury sports tourer aimed squarely at the Mercedes-Benz SL class. All Stags were built as convertible coupés, strengthened by a distinctive B-pillar “roll bar” linked to the windscreen by a T-bar to enhance rigidity and comply with proposed U.S. rollover standards. The Mk II variant, introduced in 1973, brought detail changes such as twin coachlines, a revised warning light cluster, altered instrument dial needles, a smaller steering wheel, and updated seating with provision for head restraints.

Sale Insight:

This 1977 Mk II Stag presents as a very attractive and authentic example of Triumph’s SL competitor, enhanced by the lesser seen inclusion of the hard top and accompanied by a Heritage Certificate confirming originality. Well cared for during the last 14 years of ownership, this car offers an excellent opportunity to acquire a good example of a Stag.
