Auctioneer's Notes:

A charming and well-presented 1973 Volkswagen T2 Camper Van, understood to be an Australian import and in the same ownership for the last 10 years. Benefitting from the desirable 2.0-litre Type 4 air-cooled engine, this Bay Window camper is equipped with a pop-up roof for two, a 3/4 rock and roll bed, electric hook-up and new leisure and main batteries. The Vendor reports that it has been kept garaged, remains solid underneath, and presents with good overall bodywork.

Maintenance & Condition:

The Vendor reports that the camper has been maintained by VW specialist Klassic Kombis of Wareham, with records kept since its import in 2008. The file supports this with a March 2026 invoice for £2,905 detailing a recent extensive service. Further invoices document a considerable programme of works over the years, including gaskets, wheel cylinders, cylinder head replacement, welding work, alternator replacement, regular oil changes and a substantial quantity of supporting sundry maintenance. The vehicle is tax exempt, while the MOT has been kept up to date, with the current certificate valid until July 2027.

History:

Accompanied by an extensive history file, this T2 comes with old MOT certificates, a number plate authorisation certificate supporting its change of registration, a printed instruction sheet for the mixture screw setting procedure, and a copy of VolksWorld magazine in which the camper was featured. The paperwork paints a picture of a well-cared-for example, with significant expenditure recorded since its arrival in the UK.

The Model:

The 1973 Volkswagen T2, affectionately known as the “Bay Window”, is one of the most instantly recognisable and enduring camper vans of the classic era. The 1973 model sits within the “Late Bay” generation, identifiable by its higher-mounted front indicators, larger rear light clusters and revised bumpers. Powered by a rear-mounted air-cooled flat-four engine, the T2 became a symbol of freedom, adventure and simple, characterful motoring, with strong parts support and a devoted enthusiast following continuing to this day.

Sale Insight:

With its Australian import background, long-term ownership, specialist maintenance, VolksWorld feature, extensive history file and current MOT through to July 2027, this 1973 Volkswagen T2 Camper Van offers an appealing opportunity for anyone seeking a usable, characterful and well-supported Bay Window camper. Its 2.0-litre Type 4 engine, pop-top accommodation and practical camper specification make it a particularly tempting classic for weekends away, shows and relaxed summer touring.
