In Brief:

  • Superb example of P5B generation 3.5 litre
  • Finished in Burnt Grey over a Black leather interior
  • Owned by The Vendor for the last year
  • Full restoration after a long period in dry storage
  • Accompanied by a good level of history

Auctioneer's Notes:

A handsome and evidently cherished example of the stately Rover P5B Saloon, this 1969 car presents as a wonderfully dignified British classic with the desirable 3.5-litre V8 powerplant. Having been dry stored from 1997 until 2016 before restoration, it has clearly benefited from considerable care and investment since returning to the road. The Vendor purchased the vehicle in April 2025, since when it has been stored in a classic car facility in Dorchester and has covered very little mileage, reportedly less than 300 miles in that time.

Maintenance & Condition:

The car was restored following its long period of dry storage, with works including new inner and outer sills, new D-posts and door bottoms, followed by a full respray, for which an invoice is present confirming the cost. The front and rear seats have been retrimmed, reportedly costing £1,561, while the front suspension and steering box have also been rebuilt. Further improvements include the fitment of electronic ignition, a stainless steel rear exhaust box, and a fan belt changed in 2025. The result is a car that appears to have been very well looked after and maintained with a clear eye for preserving its usability and presentation.

History:

The history file includes old MOT certificates dating back to 1997, when the recorded mileage stood at 56,308 miles. Also present are the original radio handbook, distributor and dealer directory, a write-up from a previous Brightwells sale, printed photographs showing the respray process, and the invoice confirming the cost of the respray. Further photographs appear to show delivery of the car to a previous keeper. A brand new-looking copy of James Taylor’s 2025 book on the Rover P5 and P5B accompanies the car, further adding to the thoughtful and well-curated nature of the file.

The Model:

The Rover P5B Saloon is one of the great post-war British luxury cars, famously used as official transport by Prime Ministers and senior dignitaries. The “B” denotes the adoption of Rover’s lightweight 3.5-litre V8 engine, derived from the Buick design, which transformed the P5 from a stately six-cylinder cruiser into a far more effortless and capable luxury saloon. Paired with a Borg-Warner automatic transmission, the P5B combined smooth performance with a richly appointed interior, leather upholstery, wood veneers and a commanding road presence. The Saloon retained the more traditional roofline over the Coupé, offering greater rear headroom and a particularly dignified profile.

Sale Insight:

A fine example of Rover’s flagship luxury saloon, this P5B benefits from long-term dry storage, subsequent restoration, useful mechanical improvements and an appealing history file. With its retrimmed interior, invoiced respray, rebuilt steering and suspension components, and careful recent storage, it represents a well-loved and eminently usable example of one of Britain’s most respected executive classics. Opportunities to acquire a well-presented, nicely documented P5B Saloon such as this are always worth serious consideration.
