Auctioneer's Notes:

A characterful and well-equipped 1976 VW T2 Camper, presented as a desirable Devon Moonraker conversion and offering the instantly recognisable charm of the much-loved “Bay Window” with a practical and usable camper layout. The Vendor reports that ongoing bodywork has been undertaken over the past 15 years, helping the camper present very well, while a replacement engine was fitted approximately 17,449 miles ago. Please note that, due to the engine replacement, the mileage shown should not be taken as the vehicle’s total mileage and is therefore not warranted.

Maintenance & Condition:

The Vendor advises that the camper benefits from a full working kitchen area, complete with fridge, sink, gas rings and excellent storage. The roof opens fully and is supported by gas struts, providing useful additional storage space to the front and rear when parked. The interior has been fully re-upholstered, including the bed and seating, and the front has been upgraded with sports seats. Further practical features include an integrated toilet housed within its own storage box/seat, fixings to enable a roof bunk, a leisure battery with hook-up supplying power to 3-pin sockets, and internal LED lighting for off-grid use.

History:

The paperwork includes an MOT exemption certificate, along with documentation from Towergate Underwriters for cherished vehicles. This includes a valuation certificate dated November 2011, giving the camper a value of £16,000 at that time. Also included are old MOT certificates and printed photographs of the camper, helping to support its history and long-term care.

The Model:

The 1976 Volkswagen T2 Camper, affectionately known as the “Bay Window”, is one of the most iconic classic camper vans of its era. Recognisable by its wrap-around single-piece windscreen and charming air-cooled character, the T2 became a symbol of freedom, adventure and simple holiday motoring. This example is a Devon Moonraker conversion, one of the best-known period camper layouts, typically offering a practical elevating roof arrangement, convertible seating/bed layout and compact living facilities designed to make the most of the T2’s interior space. Typically fitted with a 4-speed manual gearbox and a range of air-cooled engine options, the model offered improved comfort and drivability over the earlier Split Screen, while retaining the unmistakable Volkswagen camper appeal.

Sale Insight:

With its Devon Moonraker conversion, usable camper specification, reported replacement engine, appealing interior upgrades and practical off-grid features, this 1976 VW T2 Camper is a charming classic ready to be enjoyed. Its combination of nostalgic styling, camping practicality and supporting paperwork should make it an attractive proposition for those seeking a usable and characterful classic camper.
