Auctioneer’s Notes:

A simply fantastic example of one of Britain’s most iconic sports cars, this 1972 MGB Roadster is finished in Old English White with a Black soft top over a Red leather interior. Owned by The Vendor for the last 3 years, it is now being offered as part of a private collection of 4 cars.

A beautifully presented and extensively restored example, this Roadster benefits from a complete nut and bolt restoration carried out under the previous owner between 2019 and 2023. The specification includes a new Heritage shell, an Oselli Motorsport-built bored 2-litre engine, uprated cylinder head work, carburettor improvements, extensive cooling upgrades, a stainless steel exhaust, uprated suspension and braking components, new wire wheels and tyres, and a new hood with zip-out rear window.

Maintenance & Condition:

The restoration and improvement work completed is extensive, with all engine work carried out by Oselli Motorsport. The engine specification reportedly includes larger cylinder head valves, larger ports, uprated valve springs and rocker gear, bigger carburettor jets and ram pipes. Further supporting upgrades include a new oil cooler with larger pipes, new radiator and hoses, new heater valve, electric cooling fan and stainless steel exhaust.

The drivetrain has also been significantly improved, with a new gearbox featuring 4-speed synchromesh and 2-speed overdrive. The suspension, steering and braking systems have received considerable attention, including a new steering rack, track rod ends, universal joint and steering shaft, front and rear Spax shock absorber conversion, front king pins and bushes, front discs and pads, new brake servo, new handbrake cable and associated brake components. Further items include a new SU petrol pump, new petrol tank, new tonneau cover, new hood and 4 new wire wheels and tyres.

History:

The car is accompanied by a large history file containing a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, confirming it as a home market, right-hand drive example supplied new by Lex Motors Limited in Wiltshire in 1972.

Also included are an original MGB handbook, MOT certificates and a substantial collection of invoices for parts, servicing, maintenance and restoration work. The documentation supports the considerable investment made in the car, particularly during the restoration period under the previous owner from 2019 to 2023.

The Model:

Produced from 1962 to 1980, the MGB Roadster remains one of the most recognisable and popular British sports cars ever built. With its handsome styling, engaging driving experience, simple mechanical layout and excellent parts availability, it continues to be a favourite among collectors and enthusiasts alike. The standard MGB used the durable 1.8-litre B-Series engine, renowned for its strength and ease of maintenance. This example, however, benefits from a highly desirable Oselli Motorsport engine upgrade. Often referred to in classic circles as a “2-litre” conversion, this is typically based around Oselli’s well-regarded 1950cc fast road specification, delivering a significant performance improvement over the standard car while remaining in keeping with the period character of the MGB.

Sale Insight:

This is a particularly appealing MGB Roadster, combining classic looks with a highly desirable colour combination, extensive restoration work and meaningful performance upgrades. The presence of a new Heritage shell, Oselli-built engine, uprated running gear and comprehensive history file makes it a standout example for those seeking a well-sorted, enthusiast-owned MGB. With its restored condition, enhanced specification and strong supporting paperwork, this Roadster represents a very exciting opportunity to acquire a thoughtfully upgraded example of one of Britain’s most beloved classic sports cars.
