Auctioneer's Notes:

A tidy example of the highly regarded third-generation BMW M5, finished in Carbon Black Metallic over a Black leather interior with Grey leather inserts. Showing a genuine 89,654 miles, this E39 M5 has been owned by The Vendor for the last 21 years and records just 4 former keepers. With it's manual gearbox and landmark V8 performance, the E39 is the epitome of BMW's driver orientated M cars.

Maintenance & Condition:

The Service Booklet displays 10 stamps for services carried out between 1,667 miles in 1999 and 77,073 miles in 2011. The car has covered less than 3,000 miles in the last 10 years, suggesting sparing recent use. The history file includes invoices relating to parts, servicing and maintenance, alongside MOT certificates.

History:

Accompanied by a decent history file, including the original leatherbound BMW bookpack. This contains the Owner’s Handbook, Dealership Directory, Operating Instructions for the On Board Computer, Navigation & TV, Operating Instructions for the Car Telephone and the Service Booklet.

The Model:

Introduced at the 1998 Geneva Motor Show, the E39 M5 marked a significant chapter in BMW M history as the first M5 to be powered by a V8 engine. Its 4.9-litre S62 unit produced 394 bhp, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, giving the car a 0-60 mph time of around 4.8 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. The E39 also introduced aluminium front suspension components and a multi-link rear suspension to the M5, further refining its handling balance. Production ran from 1999 to 2003, with 20,482 examples built at BMW’s Dingolfing factory in Germany.

Sale Insight:

The E39 M5 is widely regarded as one of BMW M Division’s finest achievements, blending executive comfort with genuine driver engagement and naturally aspirated V8 performance. This Carbon Black Metallic example, with long-term ownership, modest mileage and its original BMW bookpack, represents a great opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
