A rare and highly collectible example of the 2007 Porsche Cayman S Design Edition 1, number 548 of just 777 produced worldwide. Finished in the model’s signature all-black presentation, this limited-production Cayman S was developed in conjunction with Porsche Design Studio and remains one of the most distinctive special editions of the 987 Cayman range. The car is offered following the unfortunate passing of The Vendor’s father, in whose ownership it had been cherished.
The Vendor reports that, since his father’s passing, the car has benefitted from the fitment of new discs and pads, while the tyres are described as almost brand new. The MOT has only recently expired, although the online MOT history is reassuring, showing no advisories since 2020. The accompanying invoices reference replacement spark plugs, regular checks of the drive belt and routine oil filter servicing. It should be noted that the car does smoke when running, and prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves as to its condition prior to bidding.
The history file includes the original Porsche handbooks, manuals, reference guides and dealer directories. There is also a photocopy of the service record showing four service stamps, although the original service book is not present. A particularly nice addition is the promotional set supplied in connection with the limited edition release, including an all-black notebook, white pencil and related promotional brochures, adding further appeal to collectors of this special model.
The 2007 Porsche Cayman S Design Edition 1 was a highly distinctive limited-run variant of the already acclaimed Cayman S. Limited to just 777 examples worldwide, it was finished exclusively in Basalt Black and featured matte-black “Porsche Design” striping, matching side inscriptions, 19-inch Turbo-style wheels and a purposeful lowered stance thanks to Porsche Active Suspension Management. Powered by the 3.4-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine producing around 295bhp, the Cayman S offered superb balance, sharp responses and performance figures in keeping with Porsche’s reputation, with 0-60mph achievable in around 5.1 seconds and a top speed of approximately 171mph.
With its low-production status, numbered plaque and distinctive monochrome presentation, the Design Edition 1 has become a sought-after modern classic among Porsche enthusiasts. This example, number 548 of 777, is further enhanced by the presence of its original literature and limited-edition promotional material. Offered with some recent braking expenditure and strong MOT history in recent years, it represents an interesting opportunity to acquire a rare Cayman S special edition, with the noted running smoke to be considered by bidders.
