Auctioneer's Notes:

A particularly interesting example of the first-generation Mazda MX-5, benefiting from the desirable and now rare BBR Turbo conversion. Developed with the involvement of Mazda UK, the BBR package transformed the already highly regarded 1.6-litre MX-5 into a considerably more potent sports car, increasing output to approximately 150bhp as detailed within the accompanying BBR brochure. With relatively few examples originally produced, surviving BBR cars are considerably less commonly encountered than the standard MX-5.

Maintenance & Condition:

The car has evidently been very well maintained, supported by an impressive collection of invoices totalling approximately £12,600. The paperwork is meticulously organised by year, extending all the way back to 1997 and providing an excellent record of the attention the car has received. 

Invoices from 2026 cover replacement brake calipers, a new windscreen and tail pipe, while earlier expenditure documents work to the braking system, timing belt, clutch and a substantial range of further servicing, repairs and sundry maintenance. The current MOT is valid until March 2027.

History:

One of the particularly appealing aspects of this MX-5 is its exceptionally well-organised history file. MOT certificates are present from 1997 onwards, with the majority of years represented, while the accompanying invoices have been carefully arranged chronologically from 1997 through to the present day. 

Also included are the Owner's Manual, an original Mazda MX-5 brochure and, importantly, BBR literature relating to the turbocharged specification. Taken together with approximately £12,600 of documented expenditure, the file provides an unusually comprehensive record of the car's maintenance and ownership history.

The Model:

Launched at the end of the 1980s, the first-generation Mazda MX-5 revived the traditional lightweight two-seat roadster formula, combining classic proportions, rear-wheel drive and engaging handling with Japanese engineering and reliability.

The BBR Turbo was a particularly special development of the early 1.6-litre MX-5. Brodie Brittain Racing developed a Mazda UK-approved turbocharger package which was available through the dealer network, raising power from the standard car's approximately 115bhp to around 150bhp. The conversion retained the MX-5's lightweight character while providing a substantial increase in performance, making these original BBR cars among the most interesting and sought-after derivatives of the early MX-5.

Sale Insight:

Early Mk1 MX-5s have firmly established themselves as modern classics, but genuine period BBR examples occupy a much rarer position within the model's history. Combining the purity and simplicity of the original NA-generation MX-5 with approximately 150bhp, the BBR conversion offers noticeably greater performance while retaining the character that made the model so successful.

The rarity of the BBR specification, together with this car's comprehensive history, approximately £12,600 of documented expenditure, long-running MOT record and exceptionally well-organised accompanying paperwork, makes this a particularly compelling example for the enthusiast seeking something notably more unusual than a standard early MX-5.
